Sunset at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, AZ

After claiming our spot at Mather camp ground we rushed to the rim of the Grand Canyon just in time for sunset. It was my first time ever to lay eyes on the Canyon so it was quite a special experience for me. Dustin took a video of the event :-)

I could have never comprehended the extent to which the canyon stretched -- over 277 miles along the river, 11 miles across in most spots, and well over a mile deep.

I originally thought the canyon would be just one giant crevice, but it has hundreds of side canyons. You definitely have to see it to fully grasp it's expanse.

We had a good hour or so to enjoy sunset.

The play of light and shadow across miles of canyon is a neat experience.

We had so much fun taking hundreds of pictures and seeing just how close we were willing to get to the edge.

Me...not very close! Along with a deadly fear of snakes I also have a little fear of heights.

We walked back from the rim after dark. We thought this tree looked particularly ominous.
