After the Old Faithful show, we checked out the new visitor center (opened the previous week), and continued our drive north through the park.
We pulled over for a few roadside stops, and I snapped this shot of an osprey, flying low over a stream, talons extended. I was hoping to see it snap up a trout, but it didn't -- it just flew low and fast all the way out of view.
There are a handful of geyser fields and paint pots dotting the roadside. We stopped for pretty much all of them late into the evening.

Kim fired this cool shot of me...
While I was taking this picture of the Grand Prismatic Spring...
Some of the colors that emanate from these features are entirely otherworldly.
This bubbling cauldron of boiling mud was strangely entrancing. I fired off dozens of continuous shots, which look really neat when viewed in succession.
Most of the fields are lined with elevated walkways, keeping your boots off of the cooking crust of the earth. Kim snapped this awesome shot with the wide angle...
Almost simultaneously, I shot this one with the SLR at full zoom and a 1/500 second shutter speed. The dotted mist is really cool at full resolution.

And we camped that night at the Madison campground -- a quiet, well sheltered, beautiful campground. I used a new hatchet to harvest some firewood, which provided some much needed warmth, as it got quite cold that night!
And now, three posts later, that's the end of Day 1 in Yellowstone. What a day! Stay tuned -- much more from Yellowstone to come...:-Dustin
