After leaving the Blue Ridge Parkway we headed to Arlington, VA to stay with our friend Kate.
On the way, we did get our first speeding ticket of the 4,000 miles covered thus far on the road trip..oops! Note, the speed limits in the VA/D.C. area are very, very low compared to LA and TX so to our defense we felt like fish out of water. Driving 55 on a major highway in TX or LA would most certainly get you flattened by a semi, but according to Virginia's Finest, going 70 can be considered reckless driving according to the officer...tisk tisk Dustin you crazy, reckless man!
Anyway we were greeted by the lovely Kate and welcomed by her two sweet and adorable kitties, then we headed out to dinner at a Spanish tapas restaurant. Still not knowing the outcome of the World Cup, we tried to discern whether the restaurant patrons were celebrating or commiserating. (Dustin did watch the game a couple days later -- ¡Viva La España!)

The next day Dustin and I went downtown to see the American History Museum. We were a tiny bit disappointed that a lot of the American History Museum was closed, but we did get to see C3PO, so that was pretty cool!

The ducks in the Reflecting Pool were really cute, but very messy :-)
We had salty pretzels for lunch then the skies got really dark and it poured!
Why, you ask, are we driving around Washington, DC rather than taking the Metro? Well, Dustin had to catch a flight from Baltimore back to Austin for 2 days of meetings. Oh, and that thunderstorm that hit DC about an hour earlier caused a score of flight delays into BWI, and Dustin ended up spending the night in Houston en route to Austin :-(
As an aside...every house we have stayed in so far has a basement. Basements are just cool! We are totally missing out on basement magic in Texas. Well, most basements are cool. But some (particularly those in rented house) can be creepy. Yikes.

ReplyDeleteLarger-Than-Life-Heidi is GONE! The landlord 'recovered' her and a few other items from the basement yesterday.... Now the only barrier to laundry is the corps of Larger-Than-Life crickets!
