Prague, Day 7, Giant Snails, and Single Malt Whisky

Saturday, July 24, 2010 was my only full day off in Prague. I "enjoyed" it by sleeping late, and striking out into the well-trodden city at this point around noon.

Kim and I had both seen most of what we wanted to see of Prague, at this point, so we didn't make much of a plan and just started walking. We dipped into the Torture Museum at the foot of the Charles Bridge and were appropriately appalled at how awful human have treated one another. I wouldn't call this a "trip highlight", except this is an important reminder from time to time.

We spent most of the day walking through a large park on the hill, making our way to the Strahovsky Monastery (which was in fact closed by the time we got there).

At the entrance of the park was this somber memorial to the victims of Communist rule in Czech.

It rained on us a bit while we walked. But the rain was just enough to draw out some of the largest snails you can imagine.

At the top of the hill is a replica of the Eiffel Tower and a pretty rose garden.

And although the monastery was closed, the walk was well worth it for the views of the city of Prague below.

Knowing that we had to leave the hotel at 4am for our 6am flight, I was ready to call it a night relatively early. However, drawn by some remarkable force, we stumbled directly into the premier single malt scotch whisky bar in Prague, nestled within the ancient stone walls of a sturdy tower. I enjoyed an 11 year old Strathisla and a 17 year old Auchriosk, along with a tasty banana cheese cake.

And with that, we turned in.

So long, from Prague! We'll be back on the road again soon.
